For some time, object-oriented (OO) techniques have enjoyed increasing popularity in Information Systems (IS) development, supported by a burgeoning third party component market and standardized OO infrastructures such as COM and CORBA. The industry-standard UML, together with the recent introduction of SysML, provide a comprehensive set of models for systems development from requirements analysis through to detailed design and are proving very popular. However, object-oriented techniques have not proved to be as widely adopted yet for real-time and embedded systems development, largely because many method and tools vendors have failed to provide the necessary tools to properly address the specific issues inherent in the development of complex real-time systems by large multi-disciplinary teams.
Artisan provides just such a set of tools, and Real-time Perspective (RtP) provides pragmatic guidance on their use for real-time system developers. Artisan is firmly committed to supporting users to work with their own prescribed process & methodology needs. However, for those teams which are not locked into a particular way of working, RtP provides a clear focus on how to start from a blank page and build complex, software-intensive systems. RtP takes into account that systems engineers, software engineers and hardware engineers must collaborate on the development of a system. It incorporates specific modeling techniques (which are supported by Artisan tools) and process steps that bring these three disciplines to a common understanding of the system.
Artisan Studio provides support for real-time system definition, specification, design and implementation. Within Real-time Perspective you will find both conceptual and practical assistance for these activities.RtP Mentor is Artisan’s browsable description of Real-time Perspective. RtP Mentor is installed with Artisan Studio, but a PDF version can be opened on-line or can be downloaded and run on your own machine.
