Summary
Goal Structuring Notation (GSN) is a structured method for developing and presenting complex arguments. This is a technique used in safety critical systems typically within Defence, Aerospace, Rail and Nuclear industries.
The Artisan GSN Modeler is a tool for presenting arguments using Goal Structuring Notation comprising of Goals, Strategies, Solutions, Assumptions, Justifications and Context. The argument structure is stored in a multi-user database capable of supporting consistency checking and re-use of the structures.
Artisan GSN Modeler is currently available as an ‘Early Availability – Beta Download’ which runs on the English language version of Windows. This environment can be created in a Virtual Machine if your normal Windows installation uses another language. This is fully functional, single user version of the tool that you can use free of charge.

Pre-requisites/Requirements
The Artisan GSN Modeler is a minimal footprint installation that runs on top of Microsoft SQL Server or Microsoft SQL Server Express. Before you install the product please ensure you have:
- The rights to install programs on your computer
- English language version of Windows 2003, XP or Vista installed
When installing Artisan GSN Modeler, the following third party tools will be installed as part of the installation procedure if not already installed:
- Windows SQL Express 2005 1.0
- Visual C++ Runtime Libraries (X86)
- NET framework 2.0
Installation/Setup Instructions
Artisan GSN Modeler 3.0 download is a self-extracting .exe file. When run, you can then install a Standalone version of Artisan GSN Modeler. If you are going to install Artisan GSN Modeler 3.0 on a Windows Vista system please install Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005 SP2 first, Service Pack 2 is required for Microsoft SQL Server Express to be installed on Windows Vista.
- Extract the ‘GSN Modeler .zip’ file - to destination folder of your choice
- Run ‘setup.exe’ from destination folder
- Follow on-screen instructions
- Exit the installer on completion
On completion you can login with the user name "Admin" and the password "admin". After logging in as Admin you can use "User Permissions" in the "Administration" menu to add new users.
