Siemens VDO chooses Artisan Studio for automotive powertrain software development

Siemens VDO has chosen Artisan Studio as the principal embedded software development tool

Jan 01, 2008 - 09:05 AM

Siemens VDO has extensive experience in software development for embedded systems but the demands of today’s automotive market are such that increasingly complex software systems need to be built. It was clear to Siemens VDO that successful software development for its automotive powertrain control units would require a seamless process that encompasses both modeling and design, creating a need for a standardized modeling language supported by a flexible tool-based environment.

The choice of UML meant the adoption of an increasingly widespread standard that had the backing of a large community of developers, all of whom spoke the same modeling language. The choice of Artisan Studio provided the necessary, highly flexible tool-based environment for the development of the basic I/O software for its automotive powertrain control units that could be tailored to the needs of the developers. This allowed Siemens VDO to adapt the way it generated code and documentation from the model and take full advantage of the Artisan Studio environment.
Furthermore, Artisan Studio’s true multi-user repository that facilitates collaborative development was perfectly suited to Siemens VDO’s distributed development practices allowing it to be integrated into the company’s existing software development processes with ease.

Commenting on Siemens VDO’s decision, Jeremy Goulding, President and CEO of Artisan offered, “Once companies come to the conclusion to standardize on UML as their systems and software modeling language, selecting Artisan Studio as the tools-based environment to implement it is an increasingly natural choice. It ticks all the right boxes for potential customers – delivering a true multi-user repository to facilitate collaborative development, decreased development time through design reuse and the handling of multiple languages within one model, and increased developer productivity through an intuitive tool that either integrates with existing development processes out of the box or that can be readily customized to do so.”
