DoDAF/MODAF/UPDM
DoDAF
DoDAF is the Department of Defense defined Architectural Framework used to represent enterprise architectures, including the definition of the operational context, system architecture and supporting standards and documents necessary to document the enterprise.
With Artisan Studio’s support for UML 2.0 and SysML, it is the market-leading tool for systems engineering. The DoDAF profile extends Artisan Studio to provide an environment in which the entire range of DoDAF products can be modeled in a single repository, ensuring architectural consistency and completeness across all the DoDAF views.
Artisan Studio’s robust client-server technology scales to any configuration, whether you are working on a private notebook or large multi-user, multi-site configuration. The active dictionary maintains the consistency of all the DoDAF entities and diagrams and includes the unique ability to embed rich text references to create rich, navigable, and self-maintaining architectures. You can describe DoDAF compliant architectures using DoDAF diagrams, icons and symbols. This is built upon industry-leading UML 2.0 technology, enabling you to take advantage of Artisan Studio’s pedigree as a robust and feature-rich platform. When used in conjunction with the SysML profile, full lifecycle analysis and design can be contained in the same model and environment.
MODAF
MODAF is the Ministry of Defense defined Architectural Framework used to represent enterprise architectures. In particular it is used to define the operational context, the system architecture and the supporting standards and documents that are necessary to document the enterprise.
Artisan Studio already supports MODAF through the use of its existing DoDAF specification as a foundation for the MODAF profile. Studio has been recognized by the UK’s Defence Procurement Agency as an MOD approved tool and therefore approved for the use in business and capability modeling.
UPDM
Continuing on Artisan’s standards-based platform, we are contributing to a new industry standards group, the UPDM Group. The UPDM Group has been established to build on previous efforts within the Object Management Group (OMG) to develop a modeling standard that supports both the US Department of Defense Architecture Framework (DoDAF) and the UK’s Ministry of Defence Architecture Framework (MODAF). The modeling standard is called the Unified Profile for DoDAF and MODAF (UPDM). The group’s mission statement is the following: “The UPDM Group is committed to creating a unified profile for MODAF and DoDAF, leveraging the capabilities of UML, SysML and other OMG standards.”
UPDM defines an industry standard UML representation for DoDAF 1.5 and MODAF 1.2 compliant enterprise architectures. Standardizing the architecture definition language representation for both DoDAF and MODAF will result in significant improvements in the consistency, quality and tool interoperability of enterprise architectures that comply with these frameworks. The group is also drafting a Request For Proposal (RFP) for a follow-on profile to support DoDAF 2.0 and the next generation MODAF, which are both soon to be released. This will ensure that the drive to create a standardized approach to architectural frameworks will continue.
